Lawnmower Parents

If you thought "helicopter parents" were bad, brace yourself for the newest breed of parent who takes things one step further: "lawnmower parents."

These parents don't just hover; they step out in front of their kids and clear a path, smoothing over any rough patches before their children even encounter them.

Step Away From The Mower

It’s so tempting to jump in and shout out specific, directions to make sure everything goes to your plan. You really just want to help, but when you plan and direct your child's lives to help them be successful, you are actually diminishing their confidence.

Try stepping back. Your child needs to be able to believe in their ability to make decisions, complete tasks, and reach goals on their own.

School provides lots of opportunities where your child can learn to advocate for themselves. Taking the lead on this is sending a message that they can’t handle it. Step back and provide space for your child to solicit feedback from others and fight their own battles.

Shielding your child from chores may feel like you are helping them, but studies have shown that tasks around the house teach kids responsibility. It helps them to understand what it means to be part of a family. You can never start this too early.
